Today is the 77th founding anniversary of the Awami League. On June 23, 1949, the East Pakistan Awami Muslim League was established as the first major opposition party of the then Pakistan at the historic Rose Garden in K. M. Das Lane in old Dhaka. 

In the first council, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani and Shamsul Haque were elected as the president and general secretary of the party respectively. At that time, the young leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was in prison. While in prison, he was unanimously elected as the joint secretary of the first committee. 

In 1953, the second council of the party was held in Mymensingh. In this, Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani became the president and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman became the general secretary. In the third council session of the party held at the Rupmahal Cinema Hall in Sadarghat, Dhaka on October 21-23, 1955, the word 'Muslim' was dropped and the party was renamed East Pakistan Awami League. After independence, it was renamed Bangladesh Awami League. 

 Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was elected as the President of the Awami League on the eve of the historic 'Six Points' announcement on March 1, 1966. After a long time, Sheikh Hasina was elected as the President of the Awami League in the 1981 council. Since then, she has been serving as the President of the party.

Starting from the Language Movement, the Six Points of 1966, the Mass Uprising of 1969 and the Great Liberation War of 1971, the Democracy Liberation Movement of 1990—the party has led all these historical movements.
